This joint venture project entailed the construction of a multi-court Basketball facility at Challenge Stadium. The end result is the State of the art building consisting of a basement car park, 6 court secondary hall and 2 court main hall, large communal reception and administrative area on the ground floor and conference / boardroom with bars and kitchen and administrative and team offices on the first floor.

The building fulfilled the clients requirement for a long term low maintenance, high quality facility through the structure components and final external design. The building is predominantly a Structural Steel portal frame with glass facades and other cladding materials. Long span rafters creating open large spaces, of approximately 13000m2 was made possible through the design of hollow tubular steel masts, spearing upwards braced by Ronstan McAlloy Carbon Steel Rods suspending the roof structure. Ground floor and suspended slabs was conventional reinforced concrete columns, beams and slabs.

Extreme attention was given to the lighting and sports equipment electrical installation. Due to large open areas, and catering for different sporting events, state of the art integrated software systems were used for creating this requirement. Air handling efficiency was achieved through supply to only function when needed, through office and main sports hall areas.

The single biggest feature of the facility is the maple court flooring and the “egg shaped” function facility constructed with doubled layered plywood and plasterboard. Large glass walled areas creates open spaces.

This building was awarded the Best State Government Building – Metro Perth in the 2010 MBA Excellence in Construction Awards.
